Our Story
This is the human side to the birth of Leukaemia Support Queensland, which was formed on 31st October 2006. Our Inaugural President, Jane McMillan, embarked on this journey with a friend who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (Type M3). This experience continues to remind us of why we have undertaken such a worthy task and keeps us focused on what we need to do.
In August of 2004, a friend of Jane’s was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (Type M3). She had no choice but to drop everything and start treatment immediately at the RBH. Being on her own with two young children, aged 6 and 3 at the time, put her in a tough position. Jane stepped up, taking care of her children and her life so she could concentrate on treatment.
Jane’s friend achieved remission after the first month of chemotherapy and remains in remission today. However, throughout those first five months of initial chemotherapy, Jane and her friend struggled to keep the household together, enduring severe emotional, physical, and financial hardship. They faced these challenges alone, unaware that help was available.
In January 2005, Jane learned about the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland and approached them for assistance. The foundation offered financial aid to help them get back on their feet and provided much-needed counseling.
About six months later, Jane decided to give back to the foundation for the support they had received by raising awareness of the LFQ in their local community. She aimed to prevent other patients from going through the leukaemia journey in the same solitary way that she and her friend had experienced.
Exploring ways to support the Leukaemia Foundation, Jane came up with the idea of opening a branch. As they say, the rest is history.
In 2016, the branch changed its name to Leukaemia Support Queensland Inc. Jane and her amazing team of volunteers and supporters are always working hard to raise funds and awareness so they can continue the vital work they are doing. Run solely by volunteers, 100% of funds raised go back into our local community, assisting patients and their families on their long journey with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and related blood cancers.
